It had been just shy of 15 years since the monster had come to New York City.

One day it had just come from the sea. Of course there were conspiracies, that it was a US government conspiracy, that it was a Russian one, or a Japanese one, or who ever was a convenient target to point a finger at then.

But after the city was mostly flattened, the whole world took a hit, a big one. If any government had made the beast, they must be regretting it as well. The economy tanked world wide, and even now, it's still just starting to recover.

The beast couldn't be beat. It absorbed nuclear attacks, bombs made no dents in it, and no toxin seemed to work on it. And it didn't seem to worried about leaving the city, though no one new entirely why. Getting visuals, among all the burning destruction became hard, and whatever allowed it to absorb nuclear attacks sent all our equipment haywire.

With no idea how to handle the situation, the world governments decided to do the only options b they could find. They quarantined it. A massive wall was built all around the city, on the far shores and into the sea. There were great doubts that the wall would hold the beast back, but it was presented as a band-aid, a way to give them time.

Except the monster never tried to leave. And the research didn't show anything. And the guards around the wall became more laxed. And the world moved on.

A black market struck up, people who risk the tunnels and the bridges to hunt for treasures in the city. People left, and people left fast. Some are paid to search for specific objects (or at least to claim they do), some just go looking for whatever they can fine. Urban legends sprawl far and wide, that the beast settled to breed, that the town was over run with smaller monsters, that if you made a sounds or did a certain action it would find you no matter what, that if you held still it couldn't see you...no one really knows anything. The research that has been done gets passed around again and again, but it tells little.

But there's plenty that take the risk, anyway.

None of this case was making any fucking sense.

With a grunt, De shoved one of her boot heels into the wood of the bench in front of her. She looked at the computer screen in front of her, comparing the images to the print outs on the table. And trying to find any logical explanation. At least her kind of logical.

Which, given that her kind of logical was far more lenient on the logic part than most, made it really frustrating when she was stuck on a case like this.

Hailing the waitress, she gave her a charming grin as she worked on sweet talking herself into another slice of cherry pie. And if she was lucky, it'd be a la mode, too. It would soothe some of the frustration over this bullshit case, if nothing else.

Picking up the image again, she studied the shape in the shadows with her nose wrinkling up, trying to see something new. Something she hadn't noticed before.

Ozma tapped the side of the shell, listening to her finger tip echo into it's heart.

It has been sitting on her throne this morning. No one had seen who had brought it, no one knew where it came from.

When she held it up, she could hear the ocean, perfectly clear. Even, if she listened carefully, seagulls crying out over the surf.

It had to be a message from Queen Aquarine. She just didn't know what the message could be. Turning it again in her hands, she shook it, wondering if the message was tucked to deeply in the curls of the shell to escape on it's own.

This might require an adventure.

When it went down, there wasn't a lot of time to spend dithering. There was absolutely none to spend on grabbing much of anything, and very little to grab people. One of the only people at that particular party that Riddick had any desire to drag away from the capitol city was Lottie. Not his first choice for who to jump off a boat and take a long swim with, but he supposed it was better than nothing. She was tougher than she looked, anyway. Tougher than she thought she was, too.

So when the explosion rocked the boat, he grabbed her around the waist, gave her the warning of, "Time to go," and made a smooth dive off and into the lake. Well, as smooth a dive as he could manage with Lottie in tow.

In the confusion of the damage and screaming people and zooming in helicopters or whatever they were, it looked like they were overlooked. For now. A headcount would reveal them missing eventually, but hopefully by then they'd be on the other side of the lake and starting the trek across the continent. Getting to the other side of the lake was enough to worry about, to start with. Hopefully Lottie wouldn't struggle too much....

She probably would never be settled here, even if she lived here till the day she died. The air it's self weighed her down. And the feeling of people looking at her, the things they expected. She was going to drown under all of it, she was fairly certain.

At least she had made deals. For the safety of those in the Capitol. And for her sanity, being able to get up out of this hole. A big, fancy hole, yes, but just another hole in the ground. She hated coming back down here after hunting, but there wasn't really another choice.

Pushing around her food in the cafeteria, she was at least glad they could bring a little flavor into this, too. The stew today had some of the game they'd caught, and was better for it. Last night had been full of nightmares, and even knowing how much she needed this meal, she was having trouble making it go down.
